Port-a-Cath Pillow
Port-a-Cath Pillows – helps cancer patients when traveling in a vehicle.
You know how irritating it can be when the seatbelt rubs against your neck and chest? Imagine what it is like with a surgically inserted port in the chest for the infusion of medicine for cancer patients? This little pillow attaches to the seat belt of the car to protect that area. It is a simple sewing task with great results. It can be moved to the driver’s side or passenger’s side with little effort.
Please do NOT over-stuff the pillows; this makes them uncomfortable to use.
For the construction of the pillow, use any quality cotton, flannel, or Minky. Often a pretty patterned cotton is used on one side and Minky on the other side that will lay against the person’s chest. Click here for complete instructions on how to make this quick project. Cases for Smiles (ConKerr Cancer) is an organization developed to brighten the life of a child while at one of our local hospitals, St. Luke’s or St. Al’s. Guild members make and wash pillowcases made from kid friendly fabrics. Please do NOT use fabric softener. To learn more about the organization, visit their website www.conkerrcancer.org.

Cases for Smiles
Pretty Pockets were designed for mastectomy patients to hold the drain tubes so the tubes won’t pull on their incisions. They are made from flannel. To learn more about this organization, visit their website www.creativeblossoms.com.

Chemo Caps are made using fleece or an all-cotton knit and are delivered to St Luke’s Hospital System. All sizes of caps, from toddler to adult are available in the pattern.

We invite you to Google “chemo cap sewing pattern” where you will see many free patterns and styles of scarves and hats made with cotton fabric. McCalls 6521 and Kwik Sew K3481 are patterns specifically for cancer patient needs.
Knit and crochet hats are also welcome, especially adult size. www.ravelry.com has 623 free patterns for chemo caps made of yarn.

This worthy cause was added to our ongoing monthly projects and is included in our monthly Outreach fabric drawing for those who participate. The stockings will be delivered after the October meeting for the Blue Star Mothers to fill and ship.

Important: Before printing the pattern on page 3, make sure your Print Option for Page Scaling is set to None or Print to Page. If not, the pattern will print within your page margins and the stockings will be too small.
Then trace the printed pattern on an old file folder or a larger piece of paper and add a 1/4 inch seam allowance on all sides, top, and bottom.
The Guild has been invited to help make items designed to help patients with Dementia, Alzheimer’s and brain trauma. These items help calm patients and reduce their anxiety while filling their time by promoting movement, brain stimulation and flexibility. To prevent infections, the mats and muffs are intended for one-time use and will stay with the patient who receives them. Below is a document with more information and guidelines.
