April 30, 2022 Schoolhouse ~ Ice Dyeing

Instructor: Esther Kleinkauf
Date: Saturday, April 30 (fabric dyeing)
Time: 10am – 12pm
Date: Sunday afternoon (pick up your dyed fabric)
Time: TBD
Location: Boise Rigging Supply, 6750 West Victory Road, Boise
Cost: $15

Have you ever seen ice dyed fabric, with its interesting textural patterns? This is a chance to make some of your own! You will be dyeing 4 fat quarters of fabric in your choice of base colors. You won’t know exactly how the colors will “break” and therefore what your finished fabric will look like.

Esther will share her expertise in this very fun dyeing technique that uses melting ice to create wonderful textures and shading for one-of-a-kind results.

This is a 2-day class. You will dye your fabric on Saturday starting at 10 AM. On Sunday you’ll come back (at a time decided by participants) to pick up the fabric after the ice has melted. Both segments of the class will be quite short and will not take up much of your weekend!

Most of the supplies will be provided. You will only need to bring 4 fat quarters of hot-water-washed white fabric and personal protection items. Esther will be placing an order for PFD fabric before the class, so if you don’t want to find prepared fabric, please contact her well in advance of the class to add your fabric to her order.

….• 4 fat quarters of washed white fabric
……….• PFD fabric is best but not required: just no permanent press finishes
……….• Please prewash the fabric in hot water with either Synthrapol or the more readily available Dawn (or 7th Generation) dishwashing liquid
……….• Be sure to mark your fabric
………….• Esther suggests either writing your initials in the selvage or pinning on a Tyvek label
………….• All the fabric will be presoaked in the same bucket so knowing which pieces are yours is important!
….• Personal protection items
……….• Mask (N95 if possible)
……….• ”Kitchen” gloves for handling ice
……….• ”Medical” gloves for working with dye
……….• Apron to protect clothes from dye (or wear dark clothes you don’t care about)
….• All other supplies will be provided.
