SUMMARY:03/14/26 - Seeking Sunflowers! Schoolhouse - Becky Kinzer
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Sunflowers! From 1:00-5:00 on the afternoon of March 14th\, please join our 2026 Programs Chair\, Becky Kinzer\, in stitching one of two 12 ½” sunflower block designs. \nBlue and yellow are the colors of the Ukrainian flag\, and the sunflower is Ukraine’s national flower. The blocks that Becky has selected for this class are suitable for donating to “Wrap The World In Quilts\,” a non-profit organization providing quilt blocks to Ukraine. It is Becky’s hope that after learning these patterns and methods\, you will choose to donate one or more of the blocks created in class to Wrap the World with Quilts’ Ukrainian Project. The patterns will be yours to keep\, and you can create as many blocks as you wish after class has ended. \nFor one of the blocks\, Becky will teach a method to create multiple half-square-triangles that results in a beautiful flower. The other block does not use HST but makes a fast Bear Paw block that depicts a sunflower. \nBecky plans to donate any teaching fees that she receives to Wrap the World with Quilts. Guild members may also choose to participate in this class for free if they plan to donate the blocks they create in class. If you are choosing this option\, please send an email to schoolhouse@boisebasinquilters.org so that we will know how many participants to prepare for! \nAny blocks that participants choose to donate will be used to build a 1\,100 meter-long quilt to stretch the length of Kyiv’s main street. Blocks provided by over 36 countries will create a demonstration to symbolize unity\, resilience\, and peace. The blocks will then be made into quilts for distribution to civilians and soldiers there. \nIf you choose\, you may also talk to Becky about how to donate blocks on your own if you are not participating in the Schoolhouse class. \nSupplies Needed: \nFabric* (See note below.)\nStraight stitch sewing machine\nNeutral Thread\, a few pins\nRotary Cutter and mat\nRulers helpful are 6 ½” square and 12” or longer ruler\nPencil or chalk marker\nIron\, pad and extension cord (or you can use the iron provided) \n*Please bring yellow\, blue and any other supporting colored fabric that you choose (green\, brown and white were used in these examples). Some blue and yellow fabric will be provided so feel free to come even if you do not have that fabric. If you plan to bring your own fabric\, cutting it to size as per the block instructions before coming to class will help to ensure that you have time to finish the block in class!

SUMMARY:03/19/26 - Improv Gems Workshop by MJ Kinman
DESCRIPTION:On March 19\, 2026\, from 9:00-12:30\, MJ Kinman will teach a half-day workshop called “Improv Gems.” The workshop will be held in the Arrowrock South Meeting Room at the Hampton Inn/ Boise Spectrum\, 7499 W Overland Rd\, Boise\, ID 83709. \nTicket sales will open  Jan. 1st and the workshop will be made available to everyone — Guild members and the general public alike!  The price is $35. Refunds for cancellations may be requested until March 1\, 2026. \nMJ Kinman\, maker of giant gemstone quilts\, will show you how to create sparkling gem blocks in a whole new way using the power of improvisational piecing.\nLearn how to use improvisational strip-piecing techniques to create emerald-cut\, baguette-cut\, and Asscher-cut diamonds. These are diamonds that feature long\, lovely facets – the “hall of mirrors” that highlight the interior clarity of a gem. \nDuring class\, MJ will discuss color selection for gems. (Hint: there is no wrong answer!). She’ll show you how to make your gem sparkle with value contrast\, and how to make your gem glow with saturation contrast. Finally\, she’ll demonstrate simple assembly techniques to piece together your lovely creation. \nActivities include:\n• Creating a color palette that brings you joy.\n• Playing with high value contrast and saturation contrast to incorporate sparkle and glow into your gem.\n• Strip-piecing the interior facets of your gemstone.\n• Assembling the strip-pieced facets to create your own unique gemstone. \nSupply List: \nNote: MJ will bring basic freezer paper templates for members to use. However\, if students wish to purchase their own\, they can do so by purchasing it at their local grocery store OR from Amazon. The freezer paper should be 18” wide.\n• 18” ruler & Small ruler with a ¼” measurement\n• 6-8 business-size envelopes\n• Scissors and rotary cutting tools (cutter and small personal mat) Bring 2 rotary cutters if you want to cut paper with one and your fabric with another.\n• Fabric – Fat Quarters of cotton solids or gradients. Consider bringing a range of values (light\, medium\, dark) within one or two colorways. This project works best when you have a very dark value\, a very light value\, and a range of 2 or 3 medium values. White and black also work well to bump up the “bling” in your gem.\n• Iron and ironing mat\n• Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies \nInstructor Contact Information: \nMJ Kinman\, 709 Fairhill Drive\, Louisville\, KY 40207 Cell Phone/Text (Eastern Time Zone): 502-287-3034 Email: mjkinman709@gmail.com Website: https://www.mjkinman.com

SUMMARY:03/19/26 - Gems & Joy: Featuring the Gem Quilts of MJ Kinman Program
DESCRIPTION:When people ask MJ Kinman what she does\, she likes to tell them\, “I make the biggest diamonds in the world . . . but instead of using the hardest substance on earth\, I use the softest– cloth!” \nMJ says\, “The most beautiful gemstones capture light and reflect it back to us with unique brilliance\, revealing their fiery personalities. Every gem has a story to tell…just like people. \nThis slide lecture and trunk show chronicle my own story – my 25+-year adventure learning how to create the world’s biggest diamonds in cloth. Most importantly\, though\, the underlying message to my audiences throughout my presentation is the importance of choosing joy and saying “no” to fear\, both in our creative lives and in our personal lives. \nDuring my presentation\, I’ll discuss how I’ve learned to spot gemstones with personality – the unique configuration of light and color that translate into a successful work of art. I’ll discuss my techniques to create and assemble the hundreds of pieces in each diamond\, materials I use to create the wash of color and light across a gem’s surface\, and the quilting techniques that enhance a gem’s facets. We may even talk a little bit (maybe a lot) about Kentucky Bourbon\, as I describe the gem quilts in my series “Bourbon Diamonds”! \nAnd as so often happens with any artist’s decades-long journey\, I’ll share insights gleaned from my walk away from corporate life and into the creative life.” \nMJ has been featured in many of the world’s top quilting magazines. Her work is included in collections as varied as Maker’s Mark Distillery\, the National Quilt Museum in Paducah\, KY (where she has also taught workshops and had a solo show) and the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln\, NE. We are honored to have her here in Boise! \nWebsite: mjkinman.com

SUMMARY:03/20/26 - Cracking the Color Code Workshop by MJ Kinman
DESCRIPTION:No Sew Workshop \nOn March 20\, 2026\, from 9:30-3:30\, MJ Kinman will teach a workshop called “Cracking the Color Code: Master the Magic of Color Interaction.” The workshop will be held in the Arrowrock South Meeting Room at the Hampton Inn/ Boise Spectrum\, 7499 W Overland Rd\, Boise\, ID 83709. \nTicket sales will open again on Jan. 1st and the workshop will be made available to guild members and the general public. Refunds for cancellations may be requested until March 1\, 2026. \nNote that this workshop has a Kit Fee of $10 (for color wheel and fabric)\, to be paid directly to MJ at the workshop. \nJosef Albers\, the great artist/educator of the 20th Century\, acknowledged how tricky colors can be. In his words\, “Colors deceive continuously.” As artists\, how do we navigate this world of deception? \nLuckily\, by using a few simple rules\, we can predict how color will try to deceive us and thereby increase our color confidence. \nIn this hands-on class\, MJ Kinman\, maker of giant gem quilts\, will introduce you to the four rules of color interaction and show you how to apply them to your own quilt design to create dramatic effects – regardless of your subject matter. For example\, using strips and squares of solid fabric\, MJ will show you how to: \n• Add sparkle (“bling”!) to your quilts.\n• Create dramatic focal points.\n• Add exciting visual movement.\n• Make your quilts glow.\n• Create powerful transparencies.\n• Alter the appearance of a color simply by pairing with another color.\n• Create the illusion of metal surfaces without using metallic fabric or thread. \nMJ’s class is based on her new book\, “Cracking the Color Code: Master the Magic of Color Interaction”\, available in class and on her website. \nSupplied by Instructor (See Kit fee above):\n• Fabric strips and squares for experimentation\n• Color wheels \nSupply List for Students:\n• Notebook and pen\n• Rotary cutter and mat\n• Fabric scissors \nInstructor Contact Information: \nMJ Kinman\, 709 Fairhill Drive\, Louisville\, KY 40207 Cell Phone/Text (Eastern Time Zone): 502-287-3034 Email: mjkinman709@gmail.com Website: https://www.mjkinman.com
