SUMMARY:Beginning Collage (Laura Heine's Method) - Jenny Satterthwait - Workshop 03/21/25
DESCRIPTION:This class is taught by Jenny Satterthwait. \nCost for the workshop is $40.  Refunds for cancellations may be requested until Feb. 21st. After that date\, registrations become nonrefundable . . . and any remaining openings will be made available to nonmembers. \nChoose any of Laura Heine’s Teeny Tiny Collage patterns to jump into the colorful world of collage and create your own one-of-a-kind work of art. This class will explore your creative side and is a perfect way to learn collage basics. Warning: You will never look at fabric the same way! Tip: The Sewing Machine is such a fun beginning collage project that can be made to your personal unique specifications. All Teeny Tiny patterns come with 3 different projects. \nSupplies Required:   \n– Laura Heine Teeny Tiny Collage Pattern \n\nNote: You can find patterns at a lot of quilt stores. I know Quilt Crossing carries several. You can also buy the patterns on Etsy. One of the easiest ways to collage\, however\, is to go to Laura Heine’s website: www.fiberworks-heine.com and purchase a pattern and a fabric kit made for the pattern. You can purchase other supplies at Fiberworks but\, to be honest\, you will pay a premium.\n\n– Fabric listed on Pattern. These are small projects so you will not need large pieces. Scraps are perfect. If you are buying fabric for your collage\, you do not need more than 1/8 yard. Some shops have small cuts or scraps of fabric that are very inexpensive and perfect for collage! We will not have access to a quilt store during class so if you pick out your own fabric\, brings lots of choices. If you are able\, I do recommend buying the kit on Laura’s website. \n– Pattern Ease foundation (if it is listed on chosen pattern)  You may or may not need the pattern ease depending on how you finish your collage. For example\, if you collage your subject and decide to put it on a whole piece of fabric\, you will not need he pattern ease. Collaged or tiled backgrounds need to be done on pattern ease. At the end of the day\, it is easier if you have it so you have choices. Available at quilt stores\, JoAnns or Walmart. \n– Steam a Seam 2 yardage per your chosen pattern; I recommend the12” wide (which is easier to work with than the 18” or 24”). Please do NOT buy Steam a Seam 2 Lite and do not substitute another kind of fusible; it does not work as well. I will bring extra Steam a Seam 2 to class in case it is needed. SAS2 is available at quilt stores or online. \n– Karen K Buckley Medium Perfect Scissors (Blue Handle). Please note that this brand of scissors works really well with the Steam a Seam 2 and the serrated scissor edges help cut down on frayed fabric edges. If you bring a different pair of scissors\, make sure they are not too big. You will be cutting some delicate lines. Again\, these are available at quilt stores or online. \n  \n– Applique Pressing Sheet 17 x 24. This sheet will be used a lot while you are fusing fabric. You should not fuse fabric without this at any time. \n– Precision Fusing Mat 17 x 24 (this mat comes with a pressing sheet)  Side note: I LOVE THIS MAT!!! We will build our collages on this mat so it is imperative that you have it or a pressing sheet that you can see through. These mats are available on Amazon\, Quilt Stores or online at Wal-Mart. \n– Stiletto\, Purple Thang or Tweezers \n– #2 Pencil and Fine Tip Sharpie \n— Notebook and Pen for taking notes \n– Phone for taking pictures or Reducing Glass (Door Peephole from a hardware store) \n Optional but helpful supplies: \n\nTravel Iron and Wool Pressing Mat. Please note that it may not be possible to plug this in at your table because the venue may not have outlets near the worktables.\n\nRequired Pre Class Prep: To be fully prepared for class\, you will need to fuse some of your fabric. Please call Jenny at 208/890-3525 to talk about your specific project and what you need to do to prepare.

SUMMARY:Beginning Collage (Emily Taylor's Method) by Jenny Satterthwait - Workshop - 03/22/25
DESCRIPTION:This class\, taught by Jenny Satterthwait\, will be held at JK Quilts\, 4924 N Elsinore Ave\, Meridian\, ID 83646. \nCost for the workshop is $40.  Refunds for cancellations may be requested until Feb. 21st. After that date\, registrations become nonrefundable . . . and any remaining openings will be made available to nonmembers. \nEmily Taylor’s collage method\, in my opinion\, is a cross between Susan Carlson (who cuts free form from fabrics and glues them down to create a collage) and Laura Heine who cuts motifs from fabric and uses Steam a Seam 2). Emily blends these two techniques together by cutting fabric prepared with Steam a Seam 2 LITE into small pieces that are placed on parchment paper to ‘paint’ a picture. \nYou will choose one of the flower pots from Emily Taylor’s “Chinoiserie Pots” downloadable pattern to jump into the colorful world of collage and create your own one-of-a-kind work of art. This class will explore your creative side and is a perfect way to learn collage basics. Warning: You will never look at fabric the same way! If you decide you would like to do a different Emily Taylor pattern for class\, please email me at jenny.satterthwait@mac.com. \nSupplies Required: \n– Emily Taylor’s Chinoiserie Pots Pattern\nNote: This is a downloadable pattern available at Collagequilter.com. \nFabric listed on Pattern. These are small projects so you will not need large pieces. Scraps are perfect. I usually start with a 4”x6” rectangle. If you are buying fabric for your collage\, you do not need more than 1/8 yard. Some shops have small cuts or scraps of fabric that are very inexpensive and perfect for collage! Collagequilter.com also has fabric bundles by color in 1/8 yard cuts. You will need 4-5 fabrics in different values of blue/white for your vase (4 or more lights\, 4 or more mediums and 4 or more darks). You will also need flowers for fussy cutting to put into your vases and a 10” square for your background. If you want to make your vase bigger than is on the pattern\, go for it! \n– Steam a Seam 2 LITE. 2 yards of this fusible should be enough. If you run out during class\, I will have some on hand.\n– Karen K Buckley Medium Perfect Scissors (Blue Handle). Please note that this brand of scissors works really well with the Steam a Seam 2 and the serrated scissor edges help cut down on frayed fabric edges. If you bring a different pair of scissors\, make sure they are not too big. You will be cutting some delicate lines. These are available at quilt stores or online. \n– Applique Pressing Sheet 17 x 24. This sheet will be used a lot while you are fusing fabric. You should not fuse fabric without this at any time.\n– Parchment Paper – Name Brand.\n– Needle NoseTweezers\n– #2 Pencil and Fine Tip Sharpie\n— Notebook and Pen for taking notes\n– Phone for taking pictures or Reducing Glass (Door Peephole from a hardware store) \nPrepare Fabric with Fusible\n•After selecting fabric for each section of the quilt\, cut a 4”x6” rectangle of each fabric and prepare fabric with Lite Steam a Seam 2 (SAS): Remove plain paper side of SAS to expose sticky surface. Lay fabric pieces on SAS\, wrong side of fabric facing SAS. Cut around each piece and lightly press SAS to fabric using a warm iron. Now your fabric is prepared with SAS and ready to adhere to foundation fabric. \nThe more you prepare for class\, the further along on your project you will be. Please call me (Jenny) with any questions: 208/890-3525- \nOptional but helpful supplies:\n– Mini (Clover) Iron and Wool Pressing Mat.\n– Piece of cardboard or FoamCore approx. 18” x 24” wrapped in flannel and taped on back. This will be your work surface. \nJenny Satterthwait\n208/890-3525\njenny.satterthwait@mac.com

SUMMARY:Nine-Patch Pizzazz Schoolhouse - April 26\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Guild members Carolyn Blackwelder and Phyllis Kizer would love to share with you the fun\, simple “Nine-Patch Pizzazz” technique that they have used to create some very delightful quilts. This is a beginner-friendly endeavor that quilters of any level will enjoy! \nTo meet fair-use criteria with respect to Judy Sisneros\, each person participating in the class should have their own copy of her book\, “9-Patch Pizzazz: Fun\, Fast\, and Finished in a Day.” This is an older book\, but is readily available both as a paperback and a digital file from many online sources. \nParticipants will need a panel that they are willing to cut up\, along with a few fabrics that have been selected to go well with the panel. Landscape panels or ones featuring sea life (as in the samples shown) are ideal. \nSupply List: \n1. Fabric\n•	1 ½ yards focus fabric\n•	½ yard second focus fabric\n•	½ yard each of two companion fabrics\n•	½ yard for inner border\n•	1 yard for outer border\n•	1 ½ yard flannel for design wall \n2. Notions\n•	Rotary cutter\n•	Medium mat\n•	12 ½” square ruler\n•	6” x 12” ruler\n•	Thread to blend with fabrics\n•	Seam ripper\n•	Straight pins \n3. Sewing machine in good working condition with a new needle \n4. Paper & pen for notetaking \n5. Book: 9-Patch Pizzazz by Judy Sisneros\n	Before class read pages 4-10

SUMMARY:10/15/26 - Joe Cunningham (in person!) Program
DESCRIPTION:Joe Cunningham has been a professional quilt artist since 1979. He began making quilts in his hometown of Flint\, Michigan; eventually moving to San Francisco where he lives with his wife\, Carol LeMaitre\, above her Pilates studio\, and maintains a gallery/ studio to make and show his quilts. Joe travels the world to show quilts and teach\, as well as teaching his popular online classes from his studio. He has written ten quiltmaking books\, and his quilts are in the permanent collections of several museums. \nHere’s how Joe describes “Post Modern Quiltmaking\,” the lecture he’ll be giving at BBQ: \nWe all know what “Modern” quilt making is. Sort of. Now that Modern Quilts have been around for a while the world is starting to move on\, or maybe it’s just me. In this lecture I’ll talk about Modern Quilts and how they have influenced the wider quilt world\, and explain how I have come to find my own style of “Post” Modern quiltmaking. With lots of examples and time for questions\, this is a crowd favorite. \nFor more info about Joe and his quilts\, please visit his website at joecunninghamquilts.com .

SUMMARY:Riley Blake Fabrics by Jami Herndon 05/15/25
DESCRIPTION:Guild member Jami Herndon will share a little bit with us about her job as a representative for Riley Blake Fabrics. Jami says\, \n“Have you ever considered how a shop decides which fabrics to carry and how to promote them? I would love to show you the process that a shop goes through in making the decisions that result in the fabrics you get to see when you enter their shop. This will be just a little insight into how much work goes into choosing just the right pieces for each individual shop. Come take a back door peek at the exchange between a shop owner and a fabric rep – you might even take home some of the samples!”

SUMMARY:"Large Scale Minimal" by Ashelyn Downs BBQ Membership Meeting Program
DESCRIPTION:Ashelyn Downs found her sewing experience\, pattern writing\, and design background culminating in the creation of beginner-friendly quilt patterns that represent the styles and spaces of the people who get to use them. \nPulling from the full evolution of 20th-century architecture\, 90’s grunge\, street art\, travel\, and pop culture\, she combines minimalist color palettes and artistic concepts in her work\, which she hopes will inspire the next generation to value and pursue the art of quilting. \nAshelyn describes her presentation this way: \nThe trunk show/presentation includes a dozen projects featuring my improv process\, fabric selection process\, a breakdown demonstration of how I assemble my “blocks”\, a Q&A time allotment\, and take-home documents with the basic tips and outline of my process.”

SUMMARY:Minimal Improv Workshop by Ashelyn Downs
DESCRIPTION:Cost for the workshop is $50.  Refunds for cancellations may be requested until May 1st. After that date\, registrations become nonrefundable . . . and any remaining openings will be made available to nonmembers. This workshop will be held in the fellowship hall of the Boise Church of Christ\, 2000 N. El Dorado Street\, Boise. \n“Minimal improv is an intuitive piecing process that utilizes familiar and traditional block styles as accents while avoiding overly symmetrical or repetitious piecing. \nWhile many styles of improv quilting aim to reduce scraps from previous projects\, this process focuses on intentional fabric pulls (that can\, of course\, be scraps or yardage already in your stash) to create balanced and cohesive statements. \nWe avoid overcongestion and maximalism by choosing lower-volume fabrics and by “buffering” pieced elements from one another much like traditional sashing does for individual blocks. \nGet inspired by your fiber selections and let the art of improv quilting lead you to make your one-of-a-kind throw-sized quilt!” \nClick on this link for all the information you’ll need about the workshop\, including a supply list and guidance for fabric pulls: \nhttps://www.urbandwellstudio.com/workshops/improvworkshopguide

SUMMARY:One Block Wonder Schoolhouse - 07/12/25 & 07/26/25
DESCRIPTION:Former guild president Jennifer Price will show you how to create a “One-Block Wonder”! This is a two-part class\, but your $15 registration fee will get you into both sections! In the first class you will learn to line up your panels\, cut your triangles to create the hexagons for your quilt. We will talk about techniques to keep your cut hexagons organized and how to assemble them\, and begin sewing them together. \nIn the second class\, you will come with all of your half hexagons sewn together and you will learn how to assemble your quilt. This is when your creativity will get to shine. We will talk about different ways to design and lay out your quilt design. \nYou will need:\nSeven (7) fabric panels\, all alike.\n60 degree triangle ruler (I have one that can be shared\, but you will probably want your own)\n24” Ruler for cutting\nFlat head pins (the flowers work best)\nA fine point Sharpie\, or a regular pen and lots of small scraps of paper\nCutting Mat and rotary cutter (There will be a couple of cutting stations but you may want your own.)\nSewing Machine\nNeutral or matching color thread (wind bobbins for class to save some frustration)\nScissors or snips\nUsual Notions \nYou may also want to locate one of the books written by Maxine Rosenthal and Nancy Miller on this technique. SUMMARY:"Quilts Feed My Soul" Program: 2025 Quilt Show Featured Quilter - Maureen Stevens
DESCRIPTION:Maureen Stevens is the guild’s featured quilter for 2025. Her quilts will be displayed in a special exhibit at our quilt show\, and her quilting journey is the featured presentation of tonight’s program. Maureen says\, \n“I was born and raised on a farm in Wendell\, Idaho. I’m the middle child of seven but the oldest girl. I attended BYU and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Interior Design. I got married that summer and we moved to Oregon where we lived for the next 8 years where my husband went to school. We moved to Boise in 1982 and have lived in the same neighborhood (but not the same house) ever since. I have 5 children; 3 girls and 2 boys. Those children have given me 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and they live in Oregon\, Texas\, Virginia\, North Carolina and Rexburg\, Idaho. I’m very active in my church and it plays a big part in my life. \nI have always loved fabric. I learned to sew in Jr. High and made all my own clothes up until the patterns didn’t fit anymore (isn’t that a strange thing?) I made clothes for my children and some for my husband and formals for my daughters and even their wedding dresses. \nI started quilting in 1997. I decided I was going to do it right so I took a beginning quilting class from The Quilt Crossing. From there I learned about Boise Basin Quilters so I came to my first guild meeting sometime in the spring of 1998. I joined a small quilt group and I haven’t stopped since. I have learned so much from BBQ and my fellow quilters. Some of you are my dearest friends. I’ve taken lots of classes and tried new things. I have served in various capacities and been on numerous committees\, designed patterns for the website and taught Schoolhouse classes. \nMoslih Eddin Saadi wrote: \n“If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft\,\nAnd from thy slender store two loaves are left\,\nSell one\, and with the dole\nBuy hyacinths to feed the soul.” \nTo me quilts are the hyacinths that feed my soul. I could not survive if I didn’t have quilting as a creative outlet. I need the friendships and the love that you\, my fellow quilters give me. I feel so honored and blessed to be a part of this quilting community.”

SUMMARY:The Joy of Using Paint and Thread to Color Your Quilt - 2-Day Workshop (10/16/25 and 10/18/25)
DESCRIPTION:Note:  This is a two day workshop scheduled for Thursday\, October 16\, 2025\, and Saturday\, October 18\, 2025. \nThis two-day workshop walks participants through the hand-painting and thread-painting process that Judith uses for her quilts.  She says\, “Painting on fabric can be so much fun.  Seeing the colors come to life on your cloth and actually creating a design on fabric that is just yours can be so rewarding\, and I hope quilters come away with the realization that it isn’t as hard as many people think it might be.” \nIn this workshop\, students will learn the basics of painting and using photos to design their own fabric  A supply kit that includes the necessary fabric paints and a set of twelve threads will be put together by Judith and can be purchased directly from her at the workshop for $55. (Kit is optional if students already have the appropriate paint and threads and prefer to use their own.) If you plan to purchase a kit\, please let Judith know by Sept. 1st so that she can have enough time to put one together for you. \nOn the first workshop day\, Thursday\, participants will learn how to transfer a photo to fabric.  They will then paint the block.  Judith has designed blocks specifically for use in the workshop\, and they are beautiful!  (See examples shown.)  Students may paint as many or s few of the bloks as they wish\, as time permits. \nOn Friday\, there is no class!  Students may finish painting their blocks or paint additional ones in their own time and space.  they must also use this day to sandwich their blocks and prepare them for thread painting! \nWhen participants return on Saturday\, October 18\, Judith will share tips and techniques for thread painting\, and students will spend the day thread painting their projects under Judith’s tutelage.  Finishing techniques and ideas for the blocks will also be touched on briefly. \nNote that this class is not intended for beginning quilters.  Participants should have at least some experience in free-motion quilting.  No painting experience is necessary:  you must simply have the confidence to attach painting on your own blocks. \nRegistration maximum is 15 students.  This workshop is currently sold out.  You may add your name to the waitlist by sending an email to programs@boisebasinquilters.org.  Refunds for cancellations are available until September 1\, 2025\, after which registrations become nonrefundable…and any remaining openings will be opened to nonmembers.

SUMMARY:Judith Phelps Guild Presentation/Trunk Show - Program 10/16/25
DESCRIPTION:Judith Phelps\, of Battle Ground\, Washington\, is an award-winning art quilter who often incorporates a combination of techniques such as applique\, paint\, thread painting\, piecing\, and 3D objects to produce unique and eye-catching pieces. \nThe workshops that she has planned for the BBQ guild focus on two of her favorite techniques: hand painting a fabric piece from a photo and then thread painting it. Here are two beautiful examples of quilts that Judith has made using these techniques: “Solitude” and “Horse with No Name.” Both of these pieces were created for themes from the Storytellers Group\, of which she is an active member.

SUMMARY:Thread Sketching 101 - Adding Detail and Texture to Your Quilt - 1-day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegistration is now open to everyone!\nThis class is intended to be accessible to people who may not be ready to follow through with Judith’s whole process\, although all registrants must have some past experience with free-motion quilting. \nMaster the art of using thread to enhance the colors and textures of your quilt in this hands-on class. You will explore various types of threads and learn how to choose the best ones for your project. Additionally\, the course will guide you in selecting the right battings and interfacings to achieve your desired results\, along with determining the appropriate sewing machine needles for the task. We will also touch on free-motion stitching techniques and how to put more emphasis on design details. Students can either work with botanical panels painted by Judith and printed by Spoonflower or bring their own panels. If you opt to bring your own\, please send a photo of your panel to Judith at least two weeks before the class so that she can provide feedback on the pros and cons of your chosen panel and how to choose the appropriate thread. \nBesides having the eight different botanical blocks that she has designed for the workshop printed by Spoonflower\, Judith is also putting together thread sets for each block. Kits that include a botanical block (approximately 12 x 14″) and 12 spools of polyester or rayon thread chosen for that block will be $35\, payable directly to Judith at the workshop. \nIf you prefer to supply your own threads (or if you’d just like some extra blocks so that you can continue practicing your new thread-sketching skills!)\, you may also purchase blocks separately for $6 each. \nPlease let Judith know by Sept. 1st whether you plan to purchase a kit and/ or individual blocks from her\, and if so\, which block(s). She will be printing blocks and purchasing thread for the sets based on this information. \nTo order a kit or block (or if you have any questions about the class or supply list)\, please reach out to Judith at phelpsjudith@yahoo.com . \nSupply List: \n(If you have purchased the supply kit\, please exclude the first two items. If you have purchased the fabric panel\, please exclude the first item.) \n1. Fabric panel\n2. 12 polyester threads or rayon threads to match colors in panel. \n• Fat quarter for backing fabric\, measuring 18” x 22” (I prefer black). Ensure the backing is larger than both the top and batting\, allowing you to fold it over to the front to cover the batting. This helps maintain a cleaner surface for thread painting.\n• Batting\, approximately 14” x 16” (I use Warm and Natural)\n• Interfacing: 2 pieces 12” x 14” – nonwoven fusible light weight or medium weight (Pellon can be used)\n• One each black and white spools of polyester or rayon thread\n• Pencil (I use a mechanical for fine line)\n• Black ultra fine point Sharpie\n• Sewing machine in good working order\n• Extension table for sewing machine if you have one\n• Open Toe sewing foot (Free Motion Foot also known as a Darning Foot)\n• An extension cord\n• A sample sandwich to test tension\n• 12 empty bobbins for your sewing machine or bobbins filled with your thread colors\n• Scissors: fabric and small scissors to cut threads\n• Tweezers: optional but really helps when trying to control threads\n• Marking tools – your preference – I use Frixon Pens – can be found at Office Supply Stores or Michaels\n• Microtex Sewing Needles 70/10 (Schmetz)\n• Safety pins\n• Straight pins\n• Portable light (optional)\n• Pressing cloth – can be old sheets\n• Seam ripper\n• Camera: optional \nCost for the workshop is $55. Refunds for cancellations may be requested until Sept.1st\, 2025. After that date\, registrations become nonrefundable\, unless we are able to find someone to fill your spot.

SUMMARY:Quilt as You Go Schoolhouse by Kathy Hansen 10/25/25
DESCRIPTION:Kathy Hansen describes her Quilt As You Go Class as a flexible quilting technique that is fast\, fun and scrap friendly. There are many variations to this technique which we will discuss in class\, but I will show you how to strip piece and quilt at the same time. When your four blocks are completed\, we will attach them with sashing on the front and back of the quilt. Voila\, a completed 4 block quilt ready to bind. \nWe will make strip quilt blocks in class\, but this technique can be used with any block\, and even borders can be attached with the sashing. The back can be one fabric\, or a variety of coordinating fabrics can be used to make a reversible quilt. You may choose to keep adding blocks to make a larger quilt. The strip placement can be random or organized to form a pattern. This technique can be personalized in many ways. \nThings to consider: \n\nThe size you want this quilt to be. The 4 blocks can be bound as a small wall hanging/table topper or be the beginning of a larger\nThe back pieces can be the same on all the blocks\, or they can be random fabrics.\nIf you choose to make more than the four blocks\, you will need more of the sashing fabric. The sashing fabric requires more yardage than expected\, as there are pieces on the top and bottom.\nYou can make your blocks random or use the same fabrics in each block to form a You can even make a portion of the block a single piece of fabric.\nAdding quilting on the top of a finished block adds more interest\, and it is a good opportunity to use the decorative stitches on your sewing machine.\n\nSupplies: \nFabrics: \nEnough strips\, at least six inches long and any width\, precut or cut before coming to class\, to make four blocks 12 1/2 inches square. I use mostly 2 1/2-inch strips\, and a jelly roll can be used. \n1/2 yard of a sashing fabric. We will cut the sashing in class \n4 -13 1/2 inches squares of batting \n4 -13 1/2-inch squares of backing\, all the same or a variety of fabrics \n  \nYou will also need: \nSewing machine \nRotary cutter\, mat\, \nRulers\, one to cut sashing\, and a 12 1/2 inch ruler if you have one Thread\, and quilting thread if you want to add quilting \nSeam ripper\, pins\, scissors \nOther sewing tools you regularly use

SUMMARY:01/31/26 - No-Sew Braided Rug Schoolhouse Janice Black
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to try your hand at making a small braided rug entirely from braiding\, with no sewing at all involved? If so\, this class is for you! Janice Black\, our Schoolhouse chair\, would love to share this technique with you! \nSupplies and Fabric Choices: \nYou can make your rug as scrappy or as color-coordinated as you like\, but I have found that choosing a single fabric and including it throughout most of the rug (like the solid dark red in one of the rugs shown\, and the dusty solid plum color in the other rug) can help tie everything else together. You will find that colors play together very differently in a braided rug than they do in a quilt\, so once you have found your main “foundation” fabric to use throughout the rug\, you may find it the most pleasing to pull colors from just one other color family to use with it. Your fabrics do not need to be carefully chosen to exactly match . . . they will end up blending in a way that is similar to mixing paint. So\, for example\, two different shades of pink that would look terrible if used together in a quilt would probably look just fine when braided together. \nI’m really not sure how to estimate how much fabric you will need\, but you’ll probably need more than you would think! It partly depends on the size of rug you’d like to complete\, and on how wide you choose to cut your strips (which is what determines the thickness of the rug). To keep your cost down\, I would recommend purchasing an old sheet or two from a thrift store that could be used to create the major part of the rug. There is no need to use high-quality quilting cottons for this. The red rug is one that I made for my daughter from vintage double-knit fabrics\, and it turned out really well! \nTo help with guesstimating the amount of fabric needed . . . I used about seven yards of the solid plum fabric\, so probably a total of more than fourteen yards of fabric in all. For a small rug just big enough to allow you to learn the technique\, I’m guessing you would need at least 3-5 yards of fabric. \nYou will also need a pair of scissors or small but heavy-duty snips for cutting slits to join the strips together. The strips can also be cut with scissors\, or you may want to bring a rotary cutter for that. I do not recommend cutting all of your strips in advance\, because stopping periodically to cut strips can give your wrists a break from the repetitive motion of braiding the rug. \nAdditional Recommendations: Please note that knowing how to braid before coming to class would be very helpful. The class will probably also be easier for you if you are familiar with the concept of increasing on curves from having done some crochet or knitting (although I can certainly try to guide you through this if you are not familiar with it). Finally\, I would not recommend the class for someone who currently experiences a lot of pain in their wrists or hands.

SUMMARY:02/19/26 - ReUse Market - Joan Scofield- Program
DESCRIPTION:Joanie Scofield from the ReUse Market will be talking about materials available at their Garden City store. As Joanie states\, quilting materials are NOT limited to just thread\, fabric and batting. Joanie hopes to encourage any of our Small Groups or possibly establish a new Small Group interested in including unconventional materials in their quilt projects focusing on sustainability. \nThose interested in participating in these small groups will be offered store credit for the purchase of materials. Store credit is available for the first thirty (30) registered participants. ReUse Market plans to offer cash prizes and awards within the small groups outside of the Sustainability awards they are sponsoring at our Quilt Show. \nWhile our Quilt Show has a well-defined Sustainability category\, these Small Group challenges may follow different guidelines and will be expected to follow our Small Group Challenge guidelines should they choose to exhibit their works at our upcoming Quilt Show. \nJoin us for the February 19th meeting to learn more about what treasures you might find at the ReUse Market. If unable to attend\, and you’re interested in joining these small groups\, please contact Joanie at joanie@reusemarket.org

SUMMARY:02/26-27/26 - Abstracting from Reality Workshop by Lisa Flowers Ross
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Flowers Ross has agreed to teach a two-day “Abstracting from Reality” workshop for us from 8:45-3:45 on Feb. 26 & 27\, 2026. The workshop will be held at the Idaho State Archives building\, 2205 Old Penitentiary Rd.\, Boise\, 83712. \nLisa Flowers Ross is a celebrated textile artist who creates colorful\, modern\, contemporary art. Because Lisa is local\, we have the unique opportunity of being able to host this design workshop at less than half the cost that it has been offered elsewhere! \nLisa describes her “Abstracting from Reality” workshop this way:\n“Exploring different perspectives will lead to discovery of new ways of seeing. The focus of this workshop is to learn various approaches to abstraction that can be used in designing future artworks. \nUsing their own photos for inspiration\, participants will work through several exercises on paper that explore design elements and principles such as line\, shape\, repetition and value. Different ways to translate these elements into fiber will be discussed.\nParticipants will leave with a mostly completed project using either fused fabrics or collaged papers. Hand stitching may be worked on in class\, but any machine stitching and finishing will need to be completed outside of class.” \nTicket sales will open on Oct.1st and are limited to members of the Boise Basin Quilt Guild until Jan. 1st. On Jan. 1st\, the general public is invited to register for any remaining spots. The registration deadline (and the last day to request a refund) is Feb. 21st \nSupply List: \nParticipants will do several exercises on paper before working with chosen material for their individual project. \nSupplies to bring for design exercises:\n– pencil (regular 2B)\n– eraser\n– paper scissors (please do no use your fabric scissors for paper)\n– stapler\, if you have one\n– staple remover\, if you have one \nPhotos to bring:\nBring several color or black & white photos printed out on paper with image size at least 5″ x 7″ up to 8″ x 10″ (They don’t have to be super high quality\, as long as you can see the photo and some details). Photos of landscapes\, cityscapes\, architecture\, interiors\, plants\, nature or objects will be the easiest to\nstart with. It will be good to have a minimum of 5-10 pictures (more gives you more options). You might want to bring a variety to chose from so that you don’t have photos that are all landscapes or all\nflowers\, for example. \nIndependent Project Supplies:\nFirst we will work on paper exercises together. Then\, students will apply the exercises to their own project. For the individual project\, students will use one of their photos as inspiration to create an abstract design. This piece will be approximately 9 x 12″. Students will choose to create a fused fabric piece OR a collage with colored papers. I recommend bringing solid colored cotton fabrics or papers (see notes below)\, so that details can be added later with\nstitching (or markings on paper). \nIf you choose to make a fused fabric piece for the independent project\, you need to bring: \n\n a selection of pre-fused solid colored cotton fabrics. (Iron fusible webbing to the back of the fabrics.)\nSmall prints that “read” as solid may work as well.\nTighter weave fabrics are better\, as they do not fray as much.\nBe sure to bring a range of values from light to dark. The colors do not have to be realistic to what you have in your photos.\n*Please make sure fabrics are fused and ready to use.\n\nWe will not spend time in the workshop preparing the fabrics. The fused fabric will not be used until the second day. So if you are local\, you can wait to\ndecide what colors to bring after the first day\, if you like. \n\na piece of fabric or batting for the base on which to fuse your design\, at least 13″ x 16″. If you want\nthe base fabric color to show as part of your background\, then bring several colors to chose\nfrom. Otherwise\, a white or neutral color is fine.\nfabric scissors\nfabric marking tool (i.e. fabric pencil\, chalk pencil)\n\nOR if you choose to make a paper collage piece for final project\, you need to bring: \n\na selection of solid colored papers. Papers that have small prints that “read” as solid may work\, too.\nSuggestions: scrapbook papers\, construction papers\, art papers\, found papers\, painted papers\,\nmagazine papers with solid sections that can be cut out\na sturdy backing paper on which to glue your pieces\nBring a selection of at least 3-5 colors for this\, if you choose to let the background show. If you\nplan to cover the entire background with the cut out papers\, then the color of the support paper\ndoesn’t matter.\nyour favorite adhesive to attach papers\n(I will provide a glue stick but you may prefer to use Elmer’s\, scrapbooking glue or dots\, etc.)\npens\, markers\, colored pencils\, etc. to add details if you choose.\n\nSupplies the instructor will supply: \n\nblank white paper\nmaterials for value studies\n“view finder”\nglue sticks\ntracing paper\n\nIf you have any questions about supply materials\, please feel free to contact me at\nlisa@lisaflowersross.net. I look forward to working with you!\nLisa Flowers Ross \n
