SUMMARY:Building Blocks Schoolhouse February 24\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Building Blocks Schoolhouse Class\, February 24th\, 2024 \nPLEASE NOTE: Credit or refund may be requested for cancellations made before a class registration deadline (this class – February 17). \nAlmost all pieced quilt blocks\, whether simple or complex\, can be broken down into certain design elements such as half-square triangles and flying geese. In this class\, former guild president Maureen Stevens will describe twelve essential design elements that can be used to make many different quilt blocks. She will present tips and several different methods of making most of these elements and give you patterns for simple blocks that utilize these elements. Come and explore\, and maybe make a baby quilt in the process! \nSupply list: \n\nMachine in good working order\nMachine needles and ¼” foot for machine\nPins\, scissors and seam ripper\nNeutral thread\nRotary cutter\, rulers and mat\nMarking pencil\nIron and pad (we will have a few irons and boards available)\nScraps of fabric or 12 fat quarters in light\, medium and dark\n\nWe will use some of these tools as well\, so if you have any of them bring them: \n\nThat Patchwork Place 6” Bias Square\nFons &Porter Triangle Trimmers\nJudy Martin’s Ultimate Point Trimmer\nQuilt in a Day Flying Geese Ruler

SUMMARY:Introduction to Curved Piecing - BBQ Schoolhouse
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Curved Piecing taught by Lynne MacDonald \nSewing curved pieces has a bad reputation for being difficult and so not fun. WRONG! I’m going to pass along some processes learned from several teachers\, and hope that you will become a ‘curve-a-holic’ like I now am. I find that these methods allow for stress-free creation of smooth and highly accurate curves. \nI’ll demonstrate three approaches that serve different purposes. One uses commercial templates. This approach is highly suited to traditional patterns like Robbing Peter to Save Paul (one of my very favorite designs). The second approach\, learned from several classes I’ve taken from Jean Wells\, is highly suited to improv quilting and making modern landscapes\, and it requires no templating!! The last approach\, learned in classes from Patricia Belyea\, will allow you to create your own designs and easily assemble even complex curved patterns thru the use of freezer paper templates and a nifty marking method. \nThe goal of the class is to show you several different techniques to try\, and have the opportunity to practice each. Don’t expect to end the day with a finished item. I’m NOT an expert…if I can do this (and I CAN)\, you can do this \nSupply list:\nfabric (sizable scraps and fat quarters\, colors/patterns with contrast to show off curved lines. Aim for sufficient to make three finished blocks\, if you are a speed demon.)\nfreezer paper (Reynolds\, available at any grocery\, but I’ll bring my roll for you to pull from)\ncurved templates if you already own some (I’ll bring templates you can borrow\, so no need to shop if you own none as of yet)\nSharpie (fat tip black)\nprismacolor pencils in colors to easily show on your dark and light fabrics (ONLY Prismacolor—if you have none\, you can use mine. Other pencil brands cause a problem\, I’ve forgotten what it is\, but think it’s related to ironing)\nfabric marking tools (chalk or other preferred fine tip disappearing marker) for marking around/in templates\nsewing machine\nthread (it’s good to reduce seam bulk in curves\, so recommend load bobbins with a light weight & top spool with light or medium weight)\ncutting mat\nrotary cutters\, either or both of a small and/or medium diameter\, with sharp blade (I know…lists always say this\, yet we still often hope the old blade is good enough). If you have one\, nice to also have your cutter you use for paper.\ncutting ruler(s) (include one\, like a 6×12\, that is short and narrow enough to easily move around\, and has a clearly visible 1/4″ line along one edge)\npins (recommend thin pins\, like silk pins\, as you typically can sew across them rather than have to keep stopping to pull them ahead of your needle)\npaper scissors and fabric scissors\nseam ripper\, and if it will not also double as a stiletto\, bring a stiletto\nironing mat and iron to use near your machine\, if you want to save time running to a class board (you do a lot of seam pressing)

SUMMARY:Big Stitch Quilting - Quilters Schoolhouse - Class is full
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Janice Black\nDate: Saturday\, January 6\, 2024\nLocation: Boise Rigging Supply\, 6750 West Victory Road\, Boise\nCost: $15 \nMore information…\nBig-stitch quilting uses chunky contrasting threads and large stitches to finish a quilt rapidly by hand while adding a lot of texture and interest. Although this type of quilting has been around for a long time and can be found in antique quilts\, it has enjoyed a recent revival in popularity and works especially well with modern quilts. It is a perfect starting point for people who are complete beginners at hand quilting and also works well for people who have quilted by hand for a long time but are starting to have difficulty with tiny hand stitches because of arthritis or problems with their eyesight. \nIn this class\, you will have plenty of time to practice the technique either on your own project or on a small quilt provided by BBQ’s Quilts for Kids special activities division. \nThis is the recommended supply list: \n-A quilting hoop. These are different from embroidery hoops. They can be purchased fairly inexpensively from Joann’s if you use one of their 50% off coupons. I also have a couple that I can lend out (first come\, first served)\, or you might be able to borrow one from a fellow quilter. \n-A quilt project to work on. You may either bring your own pre-sandwiched project\, or use one provided by BBQ’s Quilts for Kids department. If you use your own\, it needs to be larger than your quilting hoop and should be basted with thread (3” long basting stitches are fine!) rather than spray-basted. Polyester or wool battings are highly recommended for this class because they are much easier than cotton to stitch through by hand. If you strongly prefer a cotton batt\, try to find one that has no scrim. \n-Chunky thread that contrasts nicely with your project. Perle cotton in size 12 or 16 is recommended. Size 8 gives a wonderful eye-catching effect and you are welcome to use it\, but be aware that it will tire your hands and wrists more quickly. The amount of thread needed will vary according to your project size and how densely you plan to quilt. 1-3 spools are probably sufficient for a small project. \n-A strong\, sharp needle with an eye large enough for your selected thread size. Chenille needles are my favorite\, but you might prefer to use a large crewel embroidery needle\, a sashiko needle\, or a needle specifically made for big-stitch quilting. \n-Thread snips or scissors \n-A thimble. Thimble designs are a matter of personal preference\, but do find one that fits well and feels stable (not wobbly) on your finger. My favorite is Bohin’s gold-plated brass thimble\, a fairly inexpensive thimble that can fit more than one of your fingers nicely because of its long\, tapered design. A thimble design with a raised circle at the tip can help keep your needle from slipping off. If you have long nails\, you may want to try a Clover open-sided thimble.

SUMMARY:Making Fabric – Improv “Crumb” Quilting - Quilters Schoolhouse
DESCRIPTION:Click here to see other classes \nInstructor: Terri Curry\, BBQ Past President & Past Quilt Show Chair\nDate: Saturday\, October 21\nLocation: Boise Rigging Supply\, 6750 West Victory Road\, Boise\nCost: $15 \nThis class is back by popular request. \nNo! There is no loom involved. This class is a way of piecing fabric together to make a block or strip of a desired size. The method is a cross between crazy quilting and improvisational work. Don’t become intimidated. It’s not difficult. Some quilter’s call it crumb blocks. The result of your work will be a surprising and very interesting way to use scraps and even small orphan blocks by playing with color. \nUse your own scraps or scraps supplied by the instructors. Many quilters use the end result to make a quilt divided by sashing or use them with other neutral tones. You will leave the class with blocks and new ideas to use in your quilts or projects along with resources to help you. \nQuestions about this class\, suggestions for future classes\, or would like to volunteer with Quilters’ Schoolhouse contact Janice Black at schoolhouse@boisebasinquilters.org.

SUMMARY:Vintage 2-Fer
DESCRIPTION:“Vintage 2-Fer”: “Quilting With Vintage Linens and Doilies” and “Rescue Those Memories\, Honor Those Talents: A Primer on Repairing Vintage Quilt Tops”\nTwo classes will be held on April 29.\nCost: Just $15 gets you into both classes! \n“Lois Alice ~ Vintage Linen ” \nClass 1 – morning\nInstructor: Lois Alice\nClass Title: Quilting With Vintage Linens and Doilies\nTime: 9am – 12pm \nGet out those vintage linens and doilies\, or start collecting some now! Come join BBQ member Lois Alice in a half-day class for suggestions on what to do with old doilies\, table runners or even handkerchiefs. She will have several examples of what she did with some of her Grandmother’s handwork. Since there is no right or wrong way to turn your vintage linens (or not so vintage) into a usable quilt (or curtain\, tote\, pincushion or other object)\, she will have lots of suggestions appealing to different tastes\, plus websites for other ways to turn something that you have in a pile into something that you can use. \nSupply list: a sewing machine is optional. Most of Lois’ work was done by hand\, except for the final quilting. Dig out fun backgrounds for your pieces….that piece of lamé\, or satin or silk… things to sew on top of the vintage pieces…buttons\, lace\, frilly yarn\, seed beads\, commercial appliqué motifs (think prom or wedding outfits). Hand dyed fabric or samples of decorator fabric also work well. \nClass 2 – afternoon\nInstructor: Vicki Francis\nClass Title: Rescue Those Memories\, Honor Those Talents: A Primer on Repairing Vintage Quilt Tops\nTime: 1pm – 3pm \nWhat do we do with those quilt tops that come our way that have been hidden in garages and attics for decades? Memories can flood back as you touch the fabric but what to do with them now? We want to honor the quilt maker but this is a different animal from starting a quilt from scratch! \nVicki Francis began specializing in repairing vintage quilt tops about six years ago when a friend begged her to work on a baby quilt that had fabric from seven generations of family members in it. Reluctantly she took on the project but then discovered how heartwarming these “rescues” can be and the miraculous transformations that can happen with the right set of skills\, tools and materials. \nJoin Vicki for an afternoon of sharing her knowledge. Here are some points she will address: \n\nShould we even try to rescue it?\nShould it be cleaned? How to clean without damaging it further?\nHow to stabilize fragile fabric before even considering quilting it.\nWhat types of quilting patterns work best and why?\nHow to “interview” the quilt owners and create the provenance for future generations.\n\nFeel free to bring a quilt top to the workshop for possible suggestions on how to handle repairs. However time is a consideration so not all tops may be discussed. Interested in scheduling time with Vicki? Contact her at vickannie4@gmail.com for a $25 private consultation outside of the workshop.

SUMMARY:Dianne Kane “Round and Round and Round We Go”
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Round and Round and Round We Go\nInstructor: Dianne Kane \nRegistration fee:\nBBQ members: $40\nNon-members: $50 (Enrollment Opens March 30th) \n  \nIf you have any questions about fabric selection\, please contact Dianne: call (360-693-3994) or email (DianneKane1@gmail.com). \nWorkshop Enrollment: enrollment ends on April 18; if there are vacancies as of March 30\, enrollment will be opened to non-members. Fees are $40 for BBQ members and $50 for non-members. \n  \nArtist Statement\n“When I grow up\, I want to be an artist.” I kept repeating that mantra for decades. Then in 1998\, my cousin Judy introduced me to her quilt camp and the addiction hit. I love all parts of the quilting process: the vision\, the fondling of the fabric\, the cutting\, the combining\, the quilting\, and the standing back to enjoy. Currently I can’t say I like just one type of quilt. I’m still experimenting with all types of contemporary approaches. And I admit to being my Mother’s daughter (with the need to create) and my Daddy’s daughter and Auntie R’Lue’s niece (with the need to collect and store everything). I currently live and play in Nampa\, Idaho. \nBecause I have that “need to create\,” I want to share my creations with others. I love seeing my work being enjoyed in the homes of the friends and family. \nDuring a recent Open Studio event\, I was able to share my work. It was fun to touch each piece and remember how “it came to be”. Now\, many of those pieces have found new homes. \nMy studio is filled with wonderful “hardware”. I have several little Singer Featherweight machines\, a Bernina that is almost always accessorized with a walking foot\, and a couple of sergers. The pièce de résistance is Junebug\, my APQS longarm quilting machine\, that finishes quilts for me and for my friends and family. \nThe “software” is a wall of fabric. We quilters call that a “stash”. There’s a lot in my stash. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by the amount of projects waiting to be made\, and other times I am incredibility inspired by what’s around me.” \nVisit Dianne’s website diannekane.com to see a selection of her amazing quilts. \nQuestions about this workshop or suggestions for future workshops\, contact Lynne MacDonald programs@boisebasinquilters.org.
