SUMMARY:BBQ Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dating Quilts\nby Joyce Shoemaker\, a representative of the Quilt Heritage Museum and an AQS Textile Appraiser \nThis presentation will cover an array of aspects which speak to many quilt eras. We will discuss clues to dating fabrics including fabric colors\, blocks\, styles\, popular trends\, and edge finishes\, to name a few. Viewers will see a number of Quilt Heritage Museum collection quilts representing different quilt time periods. Attendees are invited to bring a quilt of their own to get answers as to its circa date. \nJoyce has been a quilter for nearly three decades. In 2007\, she travelled to Paducah\, KY\, to take the exams\, and became an American Quilters’ Society Certified Textile Appraiser. Before that\, she presented quilting workshops on a variety of techniques in five Western states. Her personal quilts are heavily influenced by the array of nature and wildlife she sees while growing alfalfa on her farm in eastern Idaho.

SUMMARY:Carolyn Hutchinson-It's Magic! -- BBQ Membership Meeting and Program
DESCRIPTION:Carolyn Hutchinson\, owner and designer of Carolyn’s In Stitches will be sharing a “Mini\nTrunk Show”\, highlighting her series of patterns called “Magic Tricks”. Her designs are a\ncombination of traditional and modern. Many of her designs came from asking “What if…?”\nThis series of patterns is the perfect example. Attempting to simplify the piecing of a\ncomplicated design\, Carolyn created a technique that rendered a totally unexpected block.\nWhile the created block was initially not the desired result\, and some would have cast them\naside and started over\, she continued to play “What if?” \nThe result was the first quilt in this series called\, “Windfarm”. Continuing to experiment with\ncolor selection\, strip rotation and different combinations of both\, six additional quilts\nemerged. \nAll of these designs are made from a combination of 2 ½” and 5” strips\, with no small pieces.\nAfter the first seven in this series were published\, Carolyn experimented with using only 2\n½” strips and three additional patterns were “born”. These patterns were just released at\nher Spring Retreat. \nWhile Carolyn used lots of geometry and math in creating and writing these patterns\, all the\nhard work has been done\, leaving only very easy piecing that goes together quickly. Two of\nthe patterns\, “Hinged” and “Line Dancing” make two different quilts at the same time. \nIt’s Magic!

SUMMARY:Foundation Paper Piecing with Freezer Paper - Schoolhouse
DESCRIPTION:Originally scheduled for April 27\, this class has been rescheduled for June 29. At this point\, attendance is currently full\, but check back in case that changes. \nJoyce Cambron has been quilting for over 30 years\, and was employed at both The Cotton Club and The Quilt Crossing. She first learned the freezer paper technique in a 3-day workshop with Judy Mathieson in 2002\, making a large Mariner’s Compass quilt. In 2010\, Leisure Arts published her book on machine piecing curved seams\, including 6 projects using her technique with freezer paper. \nJoyce is eager to share this fun technique with you! You’ll be introduced to the technique with an Off-Center Log Cabin Block and then move on to a Wonky House Block that Joyce will use for discussing the challenges of odd-shaped fabric pieces and what’s involved in sewing multiple sections into a block.” \nSupply List: \nThis technique was introduced to me over 20 years ago in a workshop with Judy Mathieson. Since then I have applied her technique to many Foundation Piecing designs.\nUsing Freezer Pape r for foundations has several advantages including the fact that the foundations can be re-used multiple times if handled care fully; and even better\, you don’t need to tear away the paper. \nClass Supplies\nBasic sewing supplies\nSewing machine\, thread and loaded bobbins Rotary cutter\, rulers and matt\nScissors for both fabric and paper Travel or craft iron and ironing surface\nPermanent marker for labeling foundation areas (Black Fine Point Sharpie) Optional: Add-a-Quarter Ruler\, any length.\nI will bring my collection of Add-a-Quarters for students to try but please don’t purchase one until you decide if you like this technique. \nPlease bring an old sewing machine needle for perforating paper. \nJoyce will provide pre-printed foundations on 8 1/2″ x 11″ freezer paper sheets for both of the projects. \nOff-Center Log Cabin Blocks \nThe Log Cabin is a standard for Foundation Piecing. It’s a fine beginning project for learning the Freezer Paper technique. I’ve chosen the Off-Center design because four finished blocks can be used to create a pillow top or small wall hanging with a little more zing. You can choose whether to finish the extra three foundations you’ll be creating in class\, or just make the one. \nPlease pre-cut strips. They do not have to be precisely cut – we will trim them as we move along. \nWide Strips: 1 3/4″ – 2″ wide (See Reds)\nThese are the fabrics you’ll choose for the “center” if you’re planning a 4-block top. You’ll need about 54 inches total for one block\, 216 inches total for 4 blocks.\nNarrow Strips: 1 1/4″ – 1 1/2″ wide	(See Blacks)\nThese are the fabrics which for the “background” for a 4-block “circle”. Cut about 60 inches for one block\, 240 inches for 4. \nWonky House Block \nThis 8-inch block can be finished as a potholder\, or as the center of a larger project.\nFeel free to bring plenty of fabric scraps. I’m giving you minimal sizes for the larger areas of the block. \nBackground: 6″ x 20″\nHouse: 2 1/2″ x 16″\nDoor: 2 1/2″ x 4″\nChimney: 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″\nWindow: 2″ x 2″\nTree: 4″ x 6″\nRoof: 2″ x 12″\nTrunk: 2” x 2 1/2”

DESCRIPTION:Nancy Messuri is a self-employed Idaho-based quilt designer. Paper copies of her patterns are available through https://quiltwoman.com and pdf patterns through her website\, https://nancymessuridesigns.com. \nFoundation paper piecing is Nancy’s go-to method of constructing blocks and Electric Quilt 8 is her favorite design platform. Her trademark is intricate designs that require careful piecing\, but she sometimes breaks out of that mold with a less complex design when the mood strikes. \nIn 2023\, Nancy was selected to be a Benartex Ambassador along with ten other designers. As an ambassador for the international fabric supplier\, Nancy designed numerous products to be featured in Benartex publications and assisted in the Benartex booth at the Missouri Star Quilt Festival. Her relationship with Benartex as a designer continues to this day. \nNancy’s quilt Criss Cross Stars was selected as the signature quilt for the 2023 International Quilt Festival Long Beach and was prominently featured on the cover of the program and all advertising materials. Along with Criss Cross Stars\, her quilt\, Ripple Effect\, hung at the 2023 International Quilt Festival Houston and was used extensively in promotions of that show. In addition\, her quilt\, Spinning Song\, will be hanging at International Quilt Festival 2024

SUMMARY:"Finding Your Passion and Running with It" - Jean Impey - Program
DESCRIPTION:This will be BBQ’s first-ever “hybrid” guild meeting!  Please join us at the church as usual to hear our guest speaker on the big screen and be able to participate in all the usual activities available at in-person guild meetings. However\, if you are unable to attend the meeting\, this is your chance to be able to log in from home and listen to our guest speaker via Zoom! \nIn her presentation\, “Finding Your Passion and Running With It\,” Jean Impey promises to help you explore how to uncover what makes your quilts unique and special\, and learn steps to pursue your own distinctive style. \n\n\nJean will share how the spider web design made such a huge impression on her back in 2007 that she found she couldn’t make them fast enough to keep up with all the ideas that originated from this one design!  In addition to a digital trunk show of some of the fabulous quilts that came out of this obsession\, Jean’s presentation includes an actual tutorial so you can try a few spiderwebs of your own.\n\nJean is a seasoned textile artist from San Juan Capistrano\, California\, who has taught classes across the nation\, created several commissioned public art pieces\, and been featured on the cover of Quilting Arts magazine and on Quilting Arts Television. DESCRIPTION:Please remember that the January 16 membership meeting will be a Zoom presentation and not an in-person meeting.  More information\, including the Zoom link and instructions\, will be emailed to all paid membership and Modern Art Quilt Guild members just prior to the presentation.\nNote:  Free to all current paid BBQ members and $10 for our invited Modern Art Quilt Guild members. \n  \n“The Stories Behind the Quilts” In this one-hour lecture I show some of my favorite quilts and tell the real stories about how they came to be made. Accidental cut? Check. Gifted fabric? Check. Memory quilt? Check. The whole story behind my quilts and how I made them. Fun and highly informative. \nJoe Cunningham ‘s website is https://www.joecunninghamquilts.com/. \nJoe Cunningham has been a professional quilt artist since 1979. He has written essays on the subject for museum catalogues\, books and magazines. His book\, Men and the Art of Quiltmaking was the first book on its subject. In 2004 he received a $30\,000 Shulte Grant from the Fort Mason Foundation. In 2009 he received a grant to study with the Gees Bend quilters in Alabama. In 2010 he was artist in residence at the De Young Museum in San Francisco\, which purchased one of his quilts for its permanent collection. Joe travels throughout the country to give lectures and workshops on quiltmaking. His ten books on quiltmaking include the first biography of a living quilter\, the first book on men who make quilts (Men and the Art of Quiltmaking\,) and a definitive book on marking quilts for quilting called Quilting with Style\, published by AQS. He has been seen on the Peabody Award-winning PBS series Craft in America\, the HGTV series “Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson\,” as well as “The Quilt Show” with Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson\, and others. Cunningham has performed his musical quilt show\, “Joe the Quilter\,” for guilds and theaters nationwide. His latest book is “Man Made Quilts: Civil War to the Present\,” a catalogue for the show of the same name at the Shelburne Museum. His quilts are in the permanent collections of the DeYoung museum\, The Shelburne Museum\, The Newark Museum\, The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles and many private collections. \nHe has been invited to give lectures in museums and colleges including the DeYoung Museum\, University of Michigan\, the Chicago Art Institute\, the Shelburne Museum\, and the International Quilt Study Center and Museum\, The National Quilt Museum and the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. \nJoe began making quilts in his hometown of Flint\, Michigan. He eventually moved to San Francisco where he maintains a gallery/studio to make and show his quilts. He lives with his wife\, Carol LeMaitre\, above her Pilates studio\, Sanchez Street Studios. Their two sons live nearby. Cunningham travels the world to show quilts and teach as well as teaching his popular online classes from his studio. \nNote: This is a ZOOM Presentation and is free to all BBQ members who will will receive an emailed link prior to this presentation.  In addition\, members of the Modern Art Quilt Guild have been extended an invitation to attend\, but must purchase tickets at $10 each (see below).  A Zoom link will then be emailed to those members.

SUMMARY:English Paper Piecing/Fussy Cuts Schoolhouse 01/25/25
DESCRIPTION:At this time\, the class is full.  Thank you! \nIn this class\, taught by Janice Black\, you will learn the basics of English Paper Piecing by making a single Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses block. The class will also focus on fussy cuts and how they can add interest to this project and others. \nIf you’d like to take this class online\, please let Janice Black know\, and she will make modifications so that you are able to participate! \nSupplies: \n· I will supply each participant with a set of 25 precut paper templates and a planning sheet. (Online participants would need to print and cut out their own.)\n· I will also bring template plastic to be used for fussy-cutting. However\, if you already have an acrylic 1″ honeycomb template\, please bring that!\n· Students are welcome to use a needle supplied by me\, or bring their own favorites. A long\, thin needle such as a milliners or straw needle is recommended for the piecing\, and a shorter\, sturdy needle (“Sharps) is recommended for basting.\n· If you prefer to use glue for basting\, I recommend a glue pen. Second-best choice would be a glue stick. Glue should be non-permanent.\n· Please bring a spool of standard-weight\, neutral-colored thread.\n· Fabric scissors (small ones are best!)\n· A pen or pencil that shows up on your fabric (will be on the edge of the seam allowance\, so permanent is fine)\n· Four fabrics that play well together\, with good contrast. You will only be using a tiny bit of each fabric\, so scraps or a fat quarter will be okay\, with one exception: since you will be experimenting with fussy-cutting\, at least one of your fabrics should be suitable for that. Basically\, you’ll need a fabric with a small-to-medium sized motif\, and enough of that particular fabric to include four or eight repeats. Many Tula Pink or Paula Nadelstern fabrics (like the sample fabric shown here)\, would be perfect for this. Please feel free to reach out to me with questions or photos of fabrics you’re considering using. \nThe deadline to register for this class (and to request a refund) is January 18\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Journey by Collage - Jenny Satterthwait - Program 03/20/25
DESCRIPTION:Local quilter Jenny Satterthwaite will be the featured guest speaker at our March 2025 guild meeting. Collage has taken me on many journeys: from a photograph to a quilt; from cutting fabric to ‘painting’ with fabric; and from an accountant to an artist (or at least that is what it feels like for me). This lecture is about sharing those journeys in the hope that it will inspire you to take a new journey. \nMy collage quilts include using fusible (Laura Heine)\, using just fabric and glue (Susan Carlson)\, blending these two artists (Emily Taylor)\, and then taking some of each of these women to create my own process.

SUMMARY:Beginning Collage (Laura Heine's Method) - Jenny Satterthwait - Workshop 03/21/25
DESCRIPTION:This class is taught by Jenny Satterthwait. \nCost for the workshop is $40.  Refunds for cancellations may be requested until Feb. 21st. After that date\, registrations become nonrefundable . . . and any remaining openings will be made available to nonmembers. \nChoose any of Laura Heine’s Teeny Tiny Collage patterns to jump into the colorful world of collage and create your own one-of-a-kind work of art. This class will explore your creative side and is a perfect way to learn collage basics. Warning: You will never look at fabric the same way! Tip: The Sewing Machine is such a fun beginning collage project that can be made to your personal unique specifications. All Teeny Tiny patterns come with 3 different projects. \nSupplies Required:   \n– Laura Heine Teeny Tiny Collage Pattern \n\nNote: You can find patterns at a lot of quilt stores. I know Quilt Crossing carries several. You can also buy the patterns on Etsy. One of the easiest ways to collage\, however\, is to go to Laura Heine’s website: www.fiberworks-heine.com and purchase a pattern and a fabric kit made for the pattern. You can purchase other supplies at Fiberworks but\, to be honest\, you will pay a premium.\n\n– Fabric listed on Pattern. These are small projects so you will not need large pieces. Scraps are perfect. If you are buying fabric for your collage\, you do not need more than 1/8 yard. Some shops have small cuts or scraps of fabric that are very inexpensive and perfect for collage! We will not have access to a quilt store during class so if you pick out your own fabric\, brings lots of choices. If you are able\, I do recommend buying the kit on Laura’s website. \n– Pattern Ease foundation (if it is listed on chosen pattern)  You may or may not need the pattern ease depending on how you finish your collage. For example\, if you collage your subject and decide to put it on a whole piece of fabric\, you will not need he pattern ease. Collaged or tiled backgrounds need to be done on pattern ease. At the end of the day\, it is easier if you have it so you have choices. Available at quilt stores\, JoAnns or Walmart. \n– Steam a Seam 2 yardage per your chosen pattern; I recommend the12” wide (which is easier to work with than the 18” or 24”). Please do NOT buy Steam a Seam 2 Lite and do not substitute another kind of fusible; it does not work as well. I will bring extra Steam a Seam 2 to class in case it is needed. SAS2 is available at quilt stores or online. \n– Karen K Buckley Medium Perfect Scissors (Blue Handle). Please note that this brand of scissors works really well with the Steam a Seam 2 and the serrated scissor edges help cut down on frayed fabric edges. If you bring a different pair of scissors\, make sure they are not too big. You will be cutting some delicate lines. Again\, these are available at quilt stores or online. \n  \n– Applique Pressing Sheet 17 x 24. This sheet will be used a lot while you are fusing fabric. You should not fuse fabric without this at any time. \n– Precision Fusing Mat 17 x 24 (this mat comes with a pressing sheet)  Side note: I LOVE THIS MAT!!! We will build our collages on this mat so it is imperative that you have it or a pressing sheet that you can see through. These mats are available on Amazon\, Quilt Stores or online at Wal-Mart. \n– Stiletto\, Purple Thang or Tweezers \n– #2 Pencil and Fine Tip Sharpie \n— Notebook and Pen for taking notes \n– Phone for taking pictures or Reducing Glass (Door Peephole from a hardware store) \n Optional but helpful supplies: \n\nTravel Iron and Wool Pressing Mat. Please note that it may not be possible to plug this in at your table because the venue may not have outlets near the worktables.\n\nRequired Pre Class Prep: To be fully prepared for class\, you will need to fuse some of your fabric. Please call Jenny at 208/890-3525 to talk about your specific project and what you need to do to prepare.

SUMMARY:Beginning Collage (Emily Taylor's Method) by Jenny Satterthwait - Workshop - 03/22/25
DESCRIPTION:This class\, taught by Jenny Satterthwait\, will be held at JK Quilts\, 4924 N Elsinore Ave\, Meridian\, ID 83646. \nCost for the workshop is $40.  Refunds for cancellations may be requested until Feb. 21st. After that date\, registrations become nonrefundable . . . and any remaining openings will be made available to nonmembers. \nEmily Taylor’s collage method\, in my opinion\, is a cross between Susan Carlson (who cuts free form from fabrics and glues them down to create a collage) and Laura Heine who cuts motifs from fabric and uses Steam a Seam 2). Emily blends these two techniques together by cutting fabric prepared with Steam a Seam 2 LITE into small pieces that are placed on parchment paper to ‘paint’ a picture. \nYou will choose one of the flower pots from Emily Taylor’s “Chinoiserie Pots” downloadable pattern to jump into the colorful world of collage and create your own one-of-a-kind work of art. This class will explore your creative side and is a perfect way to learn collage basics. Warning: You will never look at fabric the same way! If you decide you would like to do a different Emily Taylor pattern for class\, please email me at jenny.satterthwait@mac.com. \nSupplies Required: \n– Emily Taylor’s Chinoiserie Pots Pattern\nNote: This is a downloadable pattern available at Collagequilter.com. \nFabric listed on Pattern. These are small projects so you will not need large pieces. Scraps are perfect. I usually start with a 4”x6” rectangle. If you are buying fabric for your collage\, you do not need more than 1/8 yard. Some shops have small cuts or scraps of fabric that are very inexpensive and perfect for collage! Collagequilter.com also has fabric bundles by color in 1/8 yard cuts. You will need 4-5 fabrics in different values of blue/white for your vase (4 or more lights\, 4 or more mediums and 4 or more darks). You will also need flowers for fussy cutting to put into your vases and a 10” square for your background. If you want to make your vase bigger than is on the pattern\, go for it! \n– Steam a Seam 2 LITE. 2 yards of this fusible should be enough. If you run out during class\, I will have some on hand.\n– Karen K Buckley Medium Perfect Scissors (Blue Handle). Please note that this brand of scissors works really well with the Steam a Seam 2 and the serrated scissor edges help cut down on frayed fabric edges. If you bring a different pair of scissors\, make sure they are not too big. You will be cutting some delicate lines. These are available at quilt stores or online. \n– Applique Pressing Sheet 17 x 24. This sheet will be used a lot while you are fusing fabric. You should not fuse fabric without this at any time.\n– Parchment Paper – Name Brand.\n– Needle NoseTweezers\n– #2 Pencil and Fine Tip Sharpie\n— Notebook and Pen for taking notes\n– Phone for taking pictures or Reducing Glass (Door Peephole from a hardware store) \nPrepare Fabric with Fusible\n•After selecting fabric for each section of the quilt\, cut a 4”x6” rectangle of each fabric and prepare fabric with Lite Steam a Seam 2 (SAS): Remove plain paper side of SAS to expose sticky surface. Lay fabric pieces on SAS\, wrong side of fabric facing SAS. Cut around each piece and lightly press SAS to fabric using a warm iron. Now your fabric is prepared with SAS and ready to adhere to foundation fabric. \nThe more you prepare for class\, the further along on your project you will be. Please call me (Jenny) with any questions: 208/890-3525- \nOptional but helpful supplies:\n– Mini (Clover) Iron and Wool Pressing Mat.\n– Piece of cardboard or FoamCore approx. 18” x 24” wrapped in flannel and taped on back. This will be your work surface. \nJenny Satterthwait\n208/890-3525\njenny.satterthwait@mac.com
