SUMMARY:Foundation Paper Piecing with Freezer Paper - Schoolhouse
DESCRIPTION:Originally scheduled for April 27\, this class has been rescheduled for June 29. At this point\, attendance is currently full\, but check back in case that changes. \nJoyce Cambron has been quilting for over 30 years\, and was employed at both The Cotton Club and The Quilt Crossing. She first learned the freezer paper technique in a 3-day workshop with Judy Mathieson in 2002\, making a large Mariner’s Compass quilt. In 2010\, Leisure Arts published her book on machine piecing curved seams\, including 6 projects using her technique with freezer paper. \nJoyce is eager to share this fun technique with you! You’ll be introduced to the technique with an Off-Center Log Cabin Block and then move on to a Wonky House Block that Joyce will use for discussing the challenges of odd-shaped fabric pieces and what’s involved in sewing multiple sections into a block.” \nSupply List: \nThis technique was introduced to me over 20 years ago in a workshop with Judy Mathieson. Since then I have applied her technique to many Foundation Piecing designs.\nUsing Freezer Pape r for foundations has several advantages including the fact that the foundations can be re-used multiple times if handled care fully; and even better\, you don’t need to tear away the paper. \nClass Supplies\nBasic sewing supplies\nSewing machine\, thread and loaded bobbins Rotary cutter\, rulers and matt\nScissors for both fabric and paper Travel or craft iron and ironing surface\nPermanent marker for labeling foundation areas (Black Fine Point Sharpie) Optional: Add-a-Quarter Ruler\, any length.\nI will bring my collection of Add-a-Quarters for students to try but please don’t purchase one until you decide if you like this technique. \nPlease bring an old sewing machine needle for perforating paper. \nJoyce will provide pre-printed foundations on 8 1/2″ x 11″ freezer paper sheets for both of the projects. \nOff-Center Log Cabin Blocks \nThe Log Cabin is a standard for Foundation Piecing. It’s a fine beginning project for learning the Freezer Paper technique. I’ve chosen the Off-Center design because four finished blocks can be used to create a pillow top or small wall hanging with a little more zing. You can choose whether to finish the extra three foundations you’ll be creating in class\, or just make the one. \nPlease pre-cut strips. They do not have to be precisely cut – we will trim them as we move along. \nWide Strips: 1 3/4″ – 2″ wide (See Reds)\nThese are the fabrics you’ll choose for the “center” if you’re planning a 4-block top. You’ll need about 54 inches total for one block\, 216 inches total for 4 blocks.\nNarrow Strips: 1 1/4″ – 1 1/2″ wide	(See Blacks)\nThese are the fabrics which for the “background” for a 4-block “circle”. Cut about 60 inches for one block\, 240 inches for 4. \nWonky House Block \nThis 8-inch block can be finished as a potholder\, or as the center of a larger project.\nFeel free to bring plenty of fabric scraps. I’m giving you minimal sizes for the larger areas of the block. \nBackground: 6″ x 20″\nHouse: 2 1/2″ x 16″\nDoor: 2 1/2″ x 4″\nChimney: 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″\nWindow: 2″ x 2″\nTree: 4″ x 6″\nRoof: 2″ x 12″\nTrunk: 2” x 2 1/2”

SUMMARY:Carolyn Hutchinson-It's Magic! -- BBQ Membership Meeting and Program
DESCRIPTION:Carolyn Hutchinson\, owner and designer of Carolyn’s In Stitches will be sharing a “Mini\nTrunk Show”\, highlighting her series of patterns called “Magic Tricks”. Her designs are a\ncombination of traditional and modern. Many of her designs came from asking “What if…?”\nThis series of patterns is the perfect example. Attempting to simplify the piecing of a\ncomplicated design\, Carolyn created a technique that rendered a totally unexpected block.\nWhile the created block was initially not the desired result\, and some would have cast them\naside and started over\, she continued to play “What if?” \nThe result was the first quilt in this series called\, “Windfarm”. Continuing to experiment with\ncolor selection\, strip rotation and different combinations of both\, six additional quilts\nemerged. \nAll of these designs are made from a combination of 2 ½” and 5” strips\, with no small pieces.\nAfter the first seven in this series were published\, Carolyn experimented with using only 2\n½” strips and three additional patterns were “born”. These patterns were just released at\nher Spring Retreat. \nWhile Carolyn used lots of geometry and math in creating and writing these patterns\, all the\nhard work has been done\, leaving only very easy piecing that goes together quickly. Two of\nthe patterns\, “Hinged” and “Line Dancing” make two different quilts at the same time. \nIt’s Magic!

SUMMARY:BBQ Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dating Quilts\nby Joyce Shoemaker\, a representative of the Quilt Heritage Museum and an AQS Textile Appraiser \nThis presentation will cover an array of aspects which speak to many quilt eras. We will discuss clues to dating fabrics including fabric colors\, blocks\, styles\, popular trends\, and edge finishes\, to name a few. Viewers will see a number of Quilt Heritage Museum collection quilts representing different quilt time periods. Attendees are invited to bring a quilt of their own to get answers as to its circa date. \nJoyce has been a quilter for nearly three decades. In 2007\, she travelled to Paducah\, KY\, to take the exams\, and became an American Quilters’ Society Certified Textile Appraiser. Before that\, she presented quilting workshops on a variety of techniques in five Western states. Her personal quilts are heavily influenced by the array of nature and wildlife she sees while growing alfalfa on her farm in eastern Idaho.

SUMMARY:Foundation Paper Piecing with Freezer Paper 2 - Schoolhouse
DESCRIPTION:This class (on April 20 only) has been cancelled. If you have signed up for this one\, please contact Janice Black at schoolhouse@boisebasinquilters.org. She may be able to accommodate your attending the April 27 class. Thank you for your interest. You’ll be introduced to the technique with an Off-Center Log Cabin Block and then move on to a Wonky House Block that Joyce will use for discussing the challenges of odd-shaped fabric pieces and what’s involved in sewing multiple sections into a block.” \nClass registration close April 19\, 2024. \nSupply List: \nThis technique was introduced to me over 20 years ago in a workshop with Judy Mathieson.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Curved Piecing - BBQ Schoolhouse
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Curved Piecing taught by Lynne MacDonald \nSewing curved pieces has a bad reputation for being difficult and so not fun. WRONG! I’m going to pass along some processes learned from several teachers\, and hope that you will become a ‘curve-a-holic’ like I now am. I find that these methods allow for stress-free creation of smooth and highly accurate curves. \nI’ll demonstrate three approaches that serve different purposes. One uses commercial templates. This approach is highly suited to traditional patterns like Robbing Peter to Save Paul (one of my very favorite designs). The second approach\, learned from several classes I’ve taken from Jean Wells\, is highly suited to improv quilting and making modern landscapes\, and it requires no templating!! The last approach\, learned in classes from Patricia Belyea\, will allow you to create your own designs and easily assemble even complex curved patterns thru the use of freezer paper templates and a nifty marking method. \nThe goal of the class is to show you several different techniques to try\, and have the opportunity to practice each. Don’t expect to end the day with a finished item. I’m NOT an expert…if I can do this (and I CAN)\, you can do this \nSupply list:\nfabric (sizable scraps and fat quarters\, colors/patterns with contrast to show off curved lines. Aim for sufficient to make three finished blocks\, if you are a speed demon.)\nfreezer paper (Reynolds\, available at any grocery\, but I’ll bring my roll for you to pull from)\ncurved templates if you already own some (I’ll bring templates you can borrow\, so no need to shop if you own none as of yet)\nSharpie (fat tip black)\nprismacolor pencils in colors to easily show on your dark and light fabrics (ONLY Prismacolor—if you have none\, you can use mine. Other pencil brands cause a problem\, I’ve forgotten what it is\, but think it’s related to ironing)\nfabric marking tools (chalk or other preferred fine tip disappearing marker) for marking around/in templates\nsewing machine\nthread (it’s good to reduce seam bulk in curves\, so recommend load bobbins with a light weight & top spool with light or medium weight)\ncutting mat\nrotary cutters\, either or both of a small and/or medium diameter\, with sharp blade (I know…lists always say this\, yet we still often hope the old blade is good enough). If you have one\, nice to also have your cutter you use for paper.\ncutting ruler(s) (include one\, like a 6×12\, that is short and narrow enough to easily move around\, and has a clearly visible 1/4″ line along one edge)\npins (recommend thin pins\, like silk pins\, as you typically can sew across them rather than have to keep stopping to pull them ahead of your needle)\npaper scissors and fabric scissors\nseam ripper\, and if it will not also double as a stiletto\, bring a stiletto\nironing mat and iron to use near your machine\, if you want to save time running to a class board (you do a lot of seam pressing)

DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Janice Black\nDate: Saturday\, January 6\, 2024\nLocation: Boise Rigging Supply\, 6750 West Victory Road\, Boise\nCost: $15 \nMore information…\nBig-stitch quilting uses chunky contrasting threads and large stitches to finish a quilt rapidly by hand while adding a lot of texture and interest. Although this type of quilting has been around for a long time and can be found in antique quilts\, it has enjoyed a recent revival in popularity and works especially well with modern quilts. It is a perfect starting point for people who are complete beginners at hand quilting and also works well for people who have quilted by hand for a long time but are starting to have difficulty with tiny hand stitches because of arthritis or problems with their eyesight. \nIn this class\, you will have plenty of time to practice the technique either on your own project or on a small quilt provided by BBQ’s Quilts for Kids special activities division. \nThis is the recommended supply list: \n-A quilting hoop. These are different from embroidery hoops. They can be purchased fairly inexpensively from Joann’s if you use one of their 50% off coupons. I also have a couple that I can lend out (first come\, first served)\, or you might be able to borrow one from a fellow quilter. \n-A quilt project to work on. You may either bring your own pre-sandwiched project\, or use one provided by BBQ’s Quilts for Kids department. If you use your own\, it needs to be larger than your quilting hoop and should be basted with thread (3” long basting stitches are fine!) rather than spray-basted. Polyester or wool battings are highly recommended for this class because they are much easier than cotton to stitch through by hand. If you strongly prefer a cotton batt\, try to find one that has no scrim. \n-Chunky thread that contrasts nicely with your project. Perle cotton in size 12 or 16 is recommended. Size 8 gives a wonderful eye-catching effect and you are welcome to use it\, but be aware that it will tire your hands and wrists more quickly. The amount of thread needed will vary according to your project size and how densely you plan to quilt. 1-3 spools are probably sufficient for a small project. \n-A strong\, sharp needle with an eye large enough for your selected thread size. Chenille needles are my favorite\, but you might prefer to use a large crewel embroidery needle\, a sashiko needle\, or a needle specifically made for big-stitch quilting. \n-Thread snips or scissors \n-A thimble. Thimble designs are a matter of personal preference\, but do find one that fits well and feels stable (not wobbly) on your finger. My favorite is Bohin’s gold-plated brass thimble\, a fairly inexpensive thimble that can fit more than one of your fingers nicely because of its long\, tapered design. A thimble design with a raised circle at the tip can help keep your needle from slipping off. If you have long nails\, you may want to try a Clover open-sided thimble.
